Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery head up the Missouri River in the spring of 1804. Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery – Part 2 – Up the Missouri Louis as they assemble their expedition – and prepare to head into the unknown. In this episode, we go into the background of the Louisiana Territory, discuss the man most responsible for the expedition (Thomas Jefferson), and look into the backgrounds of Lewis and Clark. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark prepare to lead the Corps of Discovery west in an attempt to reach the Pacific Ocean. Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery – Part 1 – Background The result is one of the most famous journeys of exploration in history. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were tasked by President Thomas Jefferson with sailing up the Missouri River – and to the Pacific coast (if possible) – to solidify the young nation’s claim to the region. We didnt give it any food however because we need it for ourselves. In 1803, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, doubling the nation’s size overnight. He was very good at flying, and he was chirping at us. Today an unexpected visitor flew into our fort. I really hope we can last through the winter, but Im sure we will. We all take turns guarding the fort, however it is so cold outside that the guard can only stay on duty for 30 minutes. We are building the fort good just so we can survive. We have began to build a fort for protection against the Natives and the harsh winter that is almost completely here. Some of the men are having some trouble breathing due to the cold air, but its nothing serious and they will get over it. The temperature feels like its dropping every hour. He was looking for acorns, probably getting more food. We soon looked up in the trees and spotted this little fellow. Lewis and I set out on another animal finding adventure. Lewis and Clark are out purchasing small canoe like boats for the return trip. However now, at the very moment, we are preparing for the return trip. At this location it was always raining, and we all grew very homesick and couldn't wait until our return home. This fort was named after a local indian tribe. Unfortunately for us, winter was approaching again, and we couldn't start home until we knew the rivers weren't frozen. We then soon got to a beach on the coast of the Pacific. We had traveled all across the Continent. Then, Captain Lewis shouted out what we all were dying to hear. There was a massive current pushing us towards someplace. We had began to sail through around three rivers. We put it in the water and we all left that night. We managed to excape however, and we got the boat. I had a rifle, but I didnt wish to kill a young child, and I wanted to keep our expedition record of being unviolent. Alarmed, he attacked me using his pointy teeth. As Patrick Gass and I went over to take the boat, a small native child came out of his shelter. Then we will take it back, and then we will all leave. While they are sleeping we are going to take their boat. Stealing the boat is not going to be easy, there are many natives and we are sure to be seen. I am really sick of this so Patrick Gass (the replacement Sergent of Floyd.) and I volunteered to steal a boat from a nearby tribe. Some say we should just build a boat, but timing is critical if we don't want to get caught up in another winter so we should leave now. There are many ideas of what we should do. Lewis and Clark came back with only four boats.
